What does a baby need most? A simple answer would be “mother’s love, an unending supply of milk, diaper changes and sleep, right throughout the day”. This is all what a baby needs for the first few days of his life.

He’s not going to worry about how many visitors there were to see him or how many presents he got or what his new room looks like. His needs are so simple; it’s what the parent’s want that keep growing.

The parents in reality do not have to go overboard with unnecessary spending on a new born baby. It’s true that they want to lavish him with everything they have and sometimes even with what they don’t have.

They have to be more realistic and buy only what is essential and save the money which the baby is definitely going to need when he starts to grow.

There are so many modern devices and gadgets that are supposed to help make life more comfortable for baby. While all these are not really necessary, what a baby really needs during the first few weeks are as follows:

  • 3 fitted sheets for his crib
  • 5 blankets lightweight and 1 heavy weight
  • 3 packs of disposable diapers to last for at least 2-3 days
  • 10 cloth wipes
  • 2 towels with hoods
  • 5 baby washcloths
  • A gentle baby wash and a thermometer

There is no point in buying baby a lot of cute clothes at this point. These are bought mostly because the giver gets a lot of satisfaction in selecting these as gifts.

The Baby only needs diapers and in a few weeks time, some tiny pants, bonnet, booties and gloves. However, items such as wipes, wash clothes and towels will always come in useful.

Another very useful item for baby would be a tote bag to carry baby supplies when traveling. All of baby’s needs can be packed into this one bag and taken everywhere that baby goes.

Baby also does not need any expensive toys or digital products for him to be happy. A musical rattle or a colorful hanging mobile on top of his crib will keep him occupied for many hours when he starts to look around.

Baby will receive many gifts of baby products such as oils, soaps, lotions and powders . Mothers however must be careful to check whether these products are agreeable with baby’s skin or if they have unknown or dangerous substances in them.

Remember, baby skin is very tender and fragile. Use only the tried and tested brands, preferably unscented so as not to harm baby’s delicate skin.

One thing to keep in mind is that all those eye catching products in the market are not necessarily what baby needs; those are things that parents want for their babies to make themselves happy.

Your baby will be just as happy without any of those things as long as you keep him comfortable, cared for and loved.

When does a baby start to smile socially?
